Seven years ago next month the Writers Co-op began posting blogs by people living the writers’ life and we have not missed a lick since Curtis Bausse aptly noted, “There’ll be anecdotes and analysis, thoughtfulness and humour, awards and recommendations, opinions, rants and wackiness.” Or, as Mimi Speike wrote these seven years later, “Your virtual writer group, full of beans, piss, vinegar, all that.”
The Writers Co-op has met expectations.

We’ve posted 478 blogs over the last 364 weeks and published six anthologies. We have helped one another learn to write, to finish stories and novels, to edited them, published them and flail them in the marketplace. We’ve shared how we manage to schedule our writing life around spouses, kids, work, even illnesses. We have met the definition of writers co-operating.

Congratulations are in order but I wouldn’t know where to begin. I’m just happy to be associated with this bunch.

So maybe we should focus on one of Curtis’ original predictions.
“There’ll be … awards….”
Let’s create the Writers Co-op Writing Life Awards!
We began on April 26, 2016. We could come up with awards and nominations and announce them all on our 7th anniversary date, Wednesday, April 26, 2023.
This could be as much fun as it is appropriate.

Use the Comments section. Please join in, one and all. Even those we’ve yet to hear from are most welcome to suggest awards and nominations.

I’ll begin with a Nomination for an Award:
Best Managed Writing Life
Every writer with other responsibilities knows how difficult it can be to find time to write.
I, with bias, nominate SM Webb, aka Sara M. Zerig, for “Best Managed Writing Life.”
She just published her fourth Romance novel in the last three years while raising three sports-minded teenagers who travel around the country competing in ice hockey and soccer tournaments. She is also a full-time manager in the contracts department of a major tech firm. And hubby. He is happy with how she manages him and their family and their home. 🙂
Oh. The bias is, this author is also aka my daughter.
SM Webb or Sara M. Zerig or whatever her name is, also knows how to enjoy life. The blog photo is of her partying with the Colorado Avalanche ice hockey team. Owner Stan Kroenke watches with amusement as coach Jared Bednar gives her a drink from the Stanley Cup.

FASTEST START OUT OF THE GATE

I nominate an award for Fastest Start Out of the Gate to Carl Haensel, small businessman from rural Duluth, Minnesota.

Carl is an educator, biologist, photographer, writer, and fly fishing guide. With his talented wife Jade he runs a fly fishing guide service, writes articles and sells photography to regional and national magazines, and makes presentations to outdoor and conservation groups. Carl and Jade are raising their daughter Maeve on a small farm replete with gardens, orchards, and wildlife.

Carl was contacted by a publisher who had seen his writing and photography in magazines. The publisher encouraged Carl to write a book, resulting in the 360 page, full color tome FLY FISHING MINNESOTA. I was honored to be asked to write a review of my advance copy for the Minnesota Trout Unlimited newsletter.

By the time the book was finished, the pandemic had done its worst on supply chains and inflation for everything including the cost of slick paper. The publisher disappeared, assuming he would not be able to make money on the project. After some legal wrangling, Carl obtained full rights to his book and started looking for a printer. Most of the printers he contacted could not or would not take the book. The problem was, Carl had already received 2000 orders through his website, and his customers were waiting for the book.

Carl found a printer that would let him make a profit from self-publishing. The preordered books were sent out two weeks before Christmas, 2022, and Carl continued to sell the book through his website and in bookstores and outdoor shops in the area. In March 2023 he added a companion spiral-bound book of maps, with all the maps from the original book plus 20 more, intending it as a guide to carry on fishing trips.

I spent most of the third Saturday in March in Carl’s booth at the Great Waters Fly Fishing Expo in St. Paul, Minnesota, talking about fly fishing and selling books. It was a fast business. I don’t know how many books were in each box, but we had to clear away empty boxes several times, and send someone with a hand truck to bring more boxes from storage.

After lunch, I attended Carl’s breakout session in a gymnasium on fly fishing in Northern Minnesota. It was well attended. At the end of the presentation, people streamed out of the room. When I got back to the booth I had to shoulder my way through a crowd three and four deep to help with sales. Many customers thought nothing of dropping $68 for the pair of Carl’s books.

These are Carl’s first books. I don’t know if Carl will follow with another, but several customers said they wanted the same type of book covering the neighboring state of Wisconsin. Meanwhile, for a first-time book author, Carl should be recognized for the Fastest Start Out of the Gate.

Reading your Curtis quote, “There’ll be anecdotes and analysis, thoughtfulness and humour, awards and recommendations, opinions, rants and wackiness”, the word that stood out (right after the insistently misspelled ‘humour’ — oh, those Brits!) was “awards”.

Awards? I thought. I don’t remember any awards. We should have awards. I continued reading.

    Oh, yay! Awards!

I have a Nomination for an Award:

Creator of the Most Memorable Character

Every writer has the opportunity to create life on paper — or in binary digits. The best characters are the most memorable.

I, without bias, and with deference to such greats as Dickens’s Bill Sykes, Melville’s Moby Dick, and Adams’s Zaphod Beeblebrox (“the man who invented the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, ex-confidence trickster, part-time Galactic President, once described by Eccentricia Gallumbits as the Best Bang since the Big One, and recently voted the Worst Dressed Sentient Being in the Universe for the seventh time running”), nominate GD Deckard for “Creator of the Most Memorable Character.”

GD, who refuses to use “Gary” (or Gunther or whatever his name is) or periods between his initials, created Roy. Roy is clearly a current confidence trickster well on his way to becoming full-time Galactic President. GD has infused him with humor (spelled thusly to honor Roy’s enterprising American spirit), unlimited imagination, street smarts, hints of having a kind-yet-greedy heart, a twisted sense of morality, and infinite optimism. Considering GD’s personal background, this would seem to indicate GD’s own imagination, heart, and sense of humor defy all odds to the contrary.

If there is any justice in the Universe, Roy will outlive us all.

LOL! Not to be too nit-picky, Sara, but seconding the nomination for Roy is kind of like calling Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, “Frankenstein”.

For the careful thought that you put into helping other writers. Your critiques sparkle with haiku insights.

I just saw this! lol The Matsuo Basho Award! I concur! I like the title of this award … in my head for CCA (comprehensive critique artist) I was thinking of the Japanese way of turning various creative pursuits into “mastery” for instance Ikabana is the art of arranging flowers. I wondered if there was a Japanese way to deliver the art of critique … I think you found it GD!

I have an award category as well ….
I nominate Sue for Comprehensive Critique Artist”
While I feel everyone here has the ability to critique and offer relevant and relatable insight, Sue takes that skill to a whole new level.
Her ability to take you by the virtual hand and walk you to an angle you never imagined, puts her in this category. I always walk away from a Sue critique, with more ideas, and a sense of awakening.
I added artist. She brings the skill to an art form.

Aww, thank you, Sandy and GD! Not to seem unappreciative or Roy-level greedy, but could we call it the Matsuo Basho Creative Critique Artist Award? Not only is Basho my favorite haiku poet, but the full name just has a rolling ring to it, don’t you think? Still, I am honored by the nominations and the thoughts behind them.

Hey folks, I’d like to nominate Curtis Bausse for something, I’m just not sure what to call it. The Humanitarian Writer Award? The Writers Co-op Service Award? Maybe you can help.

Consider that Curtis is a founding member of the Co-op. He’s also given of his time to be the main editor of the first four Rabbit Hole volumes and has then continued as an associate editor for the next two.

He’s done that while writing the Magali Rousseau and Sophie Kiesser mystery series.

And now he’s working to raise funds for The Little Sapphires School in Madagascar. And by the way, if you haven’t stopped by his You Tube site (https://www.youtube.com/@curtisbausse) his new challenge (his An Old Bloke Runs challenge was derailed by a minor medical issue) is now to stand on one leg while reciting Shakespeare’s sonnets!

I think all of that deserves some type of recognition. But as I said I’m just not sure what to call it.

Oh, and BTW, it’s now a month to deadline for submissions to The Rabbit Hole VI. Just a reminder – pass it on!
