You must have noticed the change in appearance, and you might have wondered if we’ve become a coop instead of a co-op, but rest. Assured that we are simply updating a website that has not changed in eight years, you can breathe. Easy, though it’s not. It’s a process that includes a bit: of stuttering.

Mimi Spieke is doing the work and we’ve all seen the results of her efforts that created Sly and Maisie and their friends. Mimi’s efforts result in incredibly detailed, amazingly accurate and absolutely entertaining results. But it’s the behind-the-scenes efforts themselves that we usually don’t see.

Sue Ranscht is witnessing those efforts as she works with Mimi to keep our Show Case feature going. Right now, look for the current Show Case under “Show Case 2” at the top of the page. Clicking that button takes you to our Critique Exchange page, so better scroll down to the Show Case theme.

The problem is WordPress. They offer new themes, but new themes come with different rules and trying a new theme immediately changes the rules and deletes the old theme. Y’can’t go back. So, when I tried a new look, we ended up here, in free-fall, heading for a new look. It’s like on-the-job training for hang gliding.

Enjoy the chaos while you can. And thank Mimi and Sue for efforts way beyond the call.

As someone who built two websites I have all the empathy in the world for Mimi! I also have all the respect in the speed at which she works … my websites took me two years to be comfortable with the process… at least the process I have come up with on my own site.
Thank you Mimi, Sue and GD for plunging or lunging forward… I’ve heard change is good… after fifty seven years of living through change … I have to agree…

I’m concentrating on the ‘look’ – I depend on Sue to manage the widgets, navigation, etc. I’m having big trouble with that. Thank you, Sue!

I gather they made these new means/methods to make the sites mobile-friendly. But, compared to the old editor, this one is a nightmare.

The image on the Writer Co-op homepage will probably change to one you can see on motleytry.wordpress.com

I started a different style image for Motley, and I like it so well I began on another of the same look for here. It’s still pieces, roughly married . Figures may change. The man holding a snifter of brandy needs to be brought forward and moved left. The guy at left will either change or disappear. Color saturation/sharpness needs to be adjusted. This art is a combination of pulls from seven different paintings. This is the way I work. I bang an image together to see if it works before I groom it.

We’ll get there, but it’s very nasty going.

Some of the people in the motley logo are playing musical instruments, and all of the manuscripts on the table are musical scores.  The gang is quite motley (tho everybody looks 17-th century), but nobody seems to be a scrivener.  They do seem to be having fun.

All who want to have a presence on the Motley page give me the name you want to be known by. I am going to design a logo for each of us that displays on the Homepage and at the top of each sub-page.

Mimi: – Welcome to Mimiville (?) Possibly.

Reply to me with your moniker.

The last time I went theme shopping on WP, there was decent previewer that gave me fairly accurate idea of what a candidate new theme would look like if used on my blog. Imperfect but helpful. Maybe it’s still there but in an unobvious place on the page.

Anyway, the current theme looks better than the old one in several ways. Never did like Renoir.

Sue, I know you’re in. What’s your title? I’ve got one placeholder ‘Be Our Guest’ spot. I need one more willing-to-give-it-a-try person. I’ll show the designs when I have one more taker.

Sandy, go to motleytry.wordpress.com to see your title design at the bottom of the page.

I’m still screwing around with formats, but I like this one and I think we can make it work.

Despite psychic shock and against geek-erected barricades, progress is being made!

Mimi Spieke and Sue Ranscht are winning the battle against the WordPress Demons. You can now find the current Show Case under a single “Show Case” button at the top of the page.

More is happening behind the scenes to provide us with the capability to have individual Motley Scrivener pages. But it ain’t been easy. I’m pretty sure the Ukrainians would be proud to have Mimi and Sue fighting on their side.

GD: I’ve put a mention of the Writer Co-op Archives on Motley Try. I see the Archive is way out of date, only goes up to 2017. Can you work on that?

Arrghh … Mimi has well documented the hair pulling of revamping a website … Did I listen? Did I miss the whole rant? No! I didn’t. I’m just an idiot. *sigh* I broke one of my websites… After a full day of effing with it, I’m throwing in the towel. I need a break and some pain killer. Did I say I learn painful lessons slowly? No? Oh boy. The bright light … instead of just empathizing with Mimi, I decided I needed to have the full experience. lol Is there a bar for brain dead word pressers? Ok well if I find one .. you can find me there …

Beast .. thats the nice term. lol I got the brilliant idea that my “Art for sale ” sight should just be an art blog for now … I still don’t have my business license to sell anything and the site just sits idle. So I decided to post my artwork there and write a little bit about what inspired the piece. My intention … however, I am miles from that goal and drifting farther out to sea … I need a jet boat to get back, but will likely crash into the dock. So … I’ll try again when I have time to work it out. Dogs, work and other things will take precedence for a few days. My respect for you has gone through the roof. The mind bending required leaves absolutely no space for creative writing. I think I’m going to flaunt child labor laws and seek out a nerdy teen to work for me…

Sandy, here’s what I’m trying to do:

Get enough of an understanding of the editor to create a minimally acceptable site. That in place, expand my grasp of the editor in order to tweak my basic site into what I’d really like it to be.

Sue and I are close to the minimally acceptable site. Then I take a break and study all the information available, starting with certain problems I’ve not been able to solve. Things that seems like they should be so simple to do, but they are not.

That’s pretty much what I did… and that’s how I got to the two I have now, but then I attempted to try something new and broke it. Fixed my homepage but the blog needs work… I think I know what I need to do but I ran out of steam. So many other things need my attention before I get to try again 😂

      Mimi,
You can delete the Archives page. This new design scrolls the home page through every post, all the way back to Curtis Bausse’s original post “Here We Are” on April 26, 2016.

Thanks GD – yes, that was an attempt to group posts by theme but if we make use of category tags, they do just as well.
